US hikers freed: Timeline of key events

The two US hikers remaining in Iranian custody, Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, were released today after more than two years of detention. Here are the key points in their saga.

Sept. 14, 2010 – Shourd released

Shourd is released from prison on a $500,000 bail because of poor health. At the time, Iran faced new sanctions for its nuclear program and mounting international criticism for plans to stone a woman who was convicted of adultery. Shourd’s release was perceived by many as an effort to soften international criticism on other issues. Her release was intended to come days earlier, but the Iranian judiciary delayed it to prove that the decision was its own, not that of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, with whom it was and still is locked in a power struggle.
