Hyundai is wrapping up a great sales year with nine top safety picks, the most of any automaker this year. Only Volkswagen/Audi did as well. By redesigning the roofs of the Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage, the Korean automaker was able to earn a good rating for both. That marks quite a turnaround. The Sportage had one of the weakest roofs among SUVs when the institute released its first roof-test results in March 2009. The automaker’s midsize Sonata also earned a marginal roof rating before it was redesigned.
