2011 safest cars announced: Is your dream car a top pick?

Honda

The Honda Civic earned a top safety pick from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The award is a boost to the Civic, once the best-selling car in the United States.

Top picks:

  • Honda Civic
  • Honda Element

Although the Japanese automaker had two 2011 models that earned top safety picks, its Acura vehicles were overlooked this year. Just two years ago, Honda’s luxury nameplate earned a top pick for every vehicle in its line-up – a first. But as the institute has strengthened its ratings, Acura hasn’t been able to keep pace. The safety award is a boost for the Civic, which has been losing market share in the US and will no longer be sold in Japan. Earlier this month, Honda said it was also discontinuing the boxy Honda Element after the 2011 model year, because it was being overshadowed by its small CR-V SUV.
