Top picks:

  • Mercedes C class
  • Mercedes E class sedan
  • Mercedes E class coupe
  • Mercedes GLK

The German automaker’s E class was already a top recommended sedan by Edmunds.com and a winner of a Good Design Award from The Chicago Athenaeum before the institute weighed in and made the luxury car a top pick for safety. The $50,000 E class sedan V6 includes additional safety features like a drowsiness monitor, lane-drift alarm, and headlamps that automatically adjust their range to maximize road illumination without blinding other drivers. The E class coupe and Mercedes GLK were newcomers to the list of top picks this year.
