6. Kathleen Winter, for "Annabel"

When a hermaphrodite is born to a family in an isolated village on Canada's southeast Labrador coast in the 1960s, the child's parents and a midwife must decide how the child will be raised. When "Annabel," Canadian author Kathleen Winter's debut novel was published in the United States earlier this year, Publisher's Weekly predicted that "the novel's moral of acceptance and understanding is sure to win Winter many fans."
