Our name is about honesty. The Monitor is owned by The Christian Science Church, and we’ve always been transparent about that.
The Church publishes the Monitor because it sees good journalism as vital to progress in the world. Since 1908, we’ve aimed “to injure no man, but to bless all mankind,” as our founder, Mary Baker Eddy, put it.

Tunisia: The overlooked Arab revolution

One of the core purposes of The Christian Science Monitor is to help us break down any narrow sense of our own community or identity.
In an 1899 address, the founder of the Monitor, Mary Baker Eddy, spoke of the power of the “spirit of humanity” to do this work – to counter the forces that would divide and dominate with higher views of ourselves, our neighbors, and our capabilities for good.
This week, that spirit of humanity has been overflowing in Tunisia – the only place in the Arab world where the ideals of the pro-democracy Arab Spring took hold and are still reshaping government and society. Tunisia needs all our support, not in international aid, but in the conviction that there is a path forward out of autocracy and intolerance for the governments of the Arab world.
