Carmageddon hits Los Angeles: Five ways to cope

4. Free buses

Buses may be a good alternative to driving in "Carmageddon" traffic this weekend.

“I’m going to take the Orange line as far as I can take it,” says Martha Remple, an unemployed mom. Because of the freeway shutdown, the LA County transportation authority is offering free fares on 26 bus lines along major Westside and San Fernando routes.

“It will be fun just to sit in a bus and watch the traffic and not have to get upset about it,” she says. She recently watched a movie trailer on “funnyordie.com” for a fictitious movie, “Carmageddon,” in which all the characters were fuming and swearing at the wheel because people in adjacent lanes wouldn’t let them over.

“I’m not like that myself,” she says, “but I’m never sure that I haven’t ruined someone else’s day by making some boneheaded maneuver on the streets. I’ve driven in Paris, Madrid, Boston and New York, and Los Angeles drivers are among the most unkind. It will be a joy to be above it all, literally.”

She says she and her daughter, Sandy, will treat the whole thing as a big adventure.

“This is history,” says Remple. “We’re not going to miss it by leaving town or staying at home.”
