Final shuttle launch for Discovery: Was shuttle program worth it?

Feb. 24 will mark the last shuttle launch of Discovery, with the final flight of Endeavour to follow in April and – if there's enough money – Atlantis's last flight of the entire program in June. Here are five questions about what the shuttles have – and haven't – accomplished.

5. What happens to the shuttles after the program ends?

They are museum-bound. Dis­cov­ery is slated to replace the nonflying Enterprise at the Smithsonian In­sti­tu­tion's Air and Space Museum's display facility near Dulles Inter­na­tion­al Airport. Endeavour and Atlantis are up for grabs, with museums (and congressional delegations) from Seattle to New York vying to land one.
