Mohammed, a keeper at the Egyptian Society for Mercy to Animals (ESMA) animal shelter, plays with dogs in Saqqara, south of Cairo, Egypt, on Monday. The society is a charitable organization that shelters more than 700 cats and dogs. Volunteers also work to increase public awareness about the welfare of all animals in Egypt. The shelter has experienced a hit due to the economic situation, with increased prices and lack of medical supplies. If donations do not start coming in, the society might be forced to shut down for good.
