3. Highway travel delays (cellphone connection)

A driver uses his cellphone as he drives along California's costal highway 101 near Cardiff, Calif., in this 2008 file photo. Even if you don't have access to the Internet, a call to 511 in more than 30 states will offer up-to-date travel information. (But please, pull over to make the call or use a legal hands-free system.)

Did you know that in 1999, the US Department of Transportation designated “511” as a nationwide three-digit telephone number for roadway travel information? Each state is responsible for its own execution and while some states are still generating funding, more than 30 have implemented the system. (You can go to www.deploy511.org and check the status of the states in which you will be traveling.) Just by dialing 511 on your cellphone, you can get up-to-date travel information while you are in transit.

So, with some handy websites and a little research, you can minimize your travel frustration during the holidays and get to your final destination ready to relax and celebrate … and on time!
