Take the time to teach your children about basic finances when they reach the appropriate age: how to balance a checkbook and handle credit cards, for example.

Financial illiteracy is a big problem in society today. Most people become adults without ever learning how to balance a checkbook, handle credit cards, or the basics of purchasing a house. Teach your children to be good money managers and to be comfortable discussing financial matters.
