I’m looking for mystery books that do not include graphic violence. I’m a big fan of Louise Penny and Sue Grafton and would enjoy similar books. Can you recommend any good ones?

Dear Susan,
So you’re looking for what are called “cozies”? Here are some great mysteries – without the graphic violence.

1. Clare Fergusson & Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries

A great starting place is Julia Spencer-Fleming’s The Rev. Clare Fergusson & Russ Van Alstyne Mysteries series. The first book is “In the Bleak Midwinter,” and follows the Rev. Clare Ferguson, a former veteran who has dealt with PTSD and ministers to a small town in upstate New York. Spencer-Fleming is on Louise Penny’s level in terms of wrestling with big questions about the nature of goodness.
