4 audiobooks that are great for a little escapism

2. 'Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,' by Helen Fielding

Read by Samantha Bond (Random House Audio, 10 CDs, 11 hours and 30 minutes)

Chick lit is usually a dirty word in this reviewer’s house, but Helen Fielding’s latest is a guilty, laugh-out-loud pleasure. Bridget, now past 50 and widowed, is dipping her toe into dating – online and virtual – and Twitter, even as she fights the battle of the bulge and juggles caring for her two small children and her widowed mum. The author nails middle-age angst with such accuracy that listeners will laugh – or cringe. Samantha Bond gives us an array of believable accents, but her best attribute is her likability. It may not be high art, but this title is just the cure for the midwinter blahs. Grade: A-
