Green Square, the main square of Tripoli, has been the site of both antigovernment protests and pro-Qaddafi rallies the past several months.
On Sunday night, thousands of Tripoli residents poured into the square to celebrate the rebel takeover of most of the city. In the early months of the uprising, Qaddafi’s supporters occupied the square 24 hours a day, shouting slogans and chanting support for their leader.
Before Qaddafi took power in 1969 and renamed the spot Green Square in honor of his revolution, it was known as Martyrs’ Square. The rebels have restored the former name.
