Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is vying to placate his people after a weekend of unrest in the wake of the fall of Mubarak.
At least hundreds, perhaps thousands, turned out Feb. 12, in the central square of Algiers, Algeria's capital, to call for the ouster of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. They were met by thousands of police who stopped the planned march from happening. On Feb. 13, hundreds of protesters outside the capital clashed with police. In response, President Bouteflika has promised to lift the country's state of emergency, which has been in place for two decades, very soon, Al Jazeera reported.
