5. Indonesia

Indonesia experiences forest fires almost every year, but the fires that began in 1997 and lasted through 1998 are sometimes deemed the worst collection of forest fires in human history. The conditions that led to the fire were a result of the El Niño weather system, which resulted in exceptionally low rainfall that year. Conservation groups estimate that more than 12 million acres were burned. So much smoke was released that it caused environmental problems throughout Southeast Asia.
