Schools, trains, public transport and even garbage collection in Marseille have been blocked by strikes to pressure President Nicolas Sarkozy to back down on his plan to raise the retirement age.

The transportation and oil industries are not the only ones getting hit. Education, judicial, hospital, media, and banking workers have also been on strike, although not to the degree seen in the transportation and oil industries, according to CNN. French students have blockaded high schools and universities, sparking clashes last week and into today with police, reported the Associated Press. The BBC reports demonstrations outside 261 schools today, preventing many educations professionals from working.

Numbers have not yet been reported, but it's likely that transportation slowdowns and closures have also prevented many employees not on strike from going to work.
