Switzerland can claim the honors of world's longest rail tunnel now that it has finished drilling the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the Swiss Alps. It is 35 miles long and is expected to be opened to rail traffic in 2017. There are nonrail tunnels, however, that trump the Swiss tunnel in length.
