Founded in 1863 in Geneva, Switzerland, with the mission of protecting victims of armed conflicts, the International Committee of the Red Cross, was awarded the prize in 1917, 1944, and 1963. Additionally, the organization's founder, humanitarian activist Jean Henry Dunant, was, along with pacifist economist Frédéric Passy, the recipient of the very first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
