Mark Kirk defeated Democratic candidate Alexi Giannoulias by less than 2 percentage points in the open race for the seat vacated by Democrat Roland Burris – who was appointed to replace former Sen. Barack Obama after Mr. Obama became president. Congressman Kirk has served the Tenth Illinois District since 2001.

This Senate seat is one of six the Republican party gained in the election, narrowing the Democratic majority in the senate.
