Cain served as deputy chairman (1992-1994) and chairman (1995-1996) of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

He was a senior adviser to the 1996 presidential campaign of Bob Dole.

He also ran an unsuccessful campaign in the 2004 Republican primaries for the Senate seat from Georgia.
