It’s a sign of Republicans’ overall strength this year that California Sen. Barbara Boxer is in danger of losing the seat she has held for nearly 18 years, in a solidly Democratic state, to Republican challenger Carly Fiorina.

While Senator Boxer has enjoyed a steady – albeit small – lead for most of the campaign, Ms. Fiorina has been closing in recent weeks. The most recent poll, by Rasmussen, has Boxer up by just 2 percentage points. And she’s steadily getting less than 50 percent support.

Fiorina has been capitalizing on her status as a political outsider with business experience, and Boxer isn’t used to having such a tough battle for reelection.

Still, this is Boxer’s race to lose, and most polling experts expect her to pull out a win in the end.
