This past weekend, “Harry Potter” trumped everything from the massive “Transformers” to the gentle inhabitants of the Hundred Acre Wood. “Winnie the Pooh” crept into sixth place with only $8 million in ticket sales.

But Disney’s 2-D animated tale was a good counter-programming move for parents who didn’t want to take toddlers into the PG-13-rated “Harry Potter.” And these kinds of movies do very well on DVD, Dergarabedian says, because parents buy them for their young children to watch over and over again.

“I certainly wouldn’t want the entire world of 2-D animation to go all Eeyore over this,” he says. “This was just one extraordinary weekend with the biggest movie franchise of all time up against them.”
