Phil has Germany to thank

Punxsutawney Phil has German immigrants to thank for being used in the holiday.

Punxsutawney Phil's fame would not have been possible without the German immigrants who came to Punxsutawney, Pa., in the 1800s. They brought the tradition of Candlemas with them, which said that if a hedgehog or a badger saw its shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter. When German immigrants came to Punxsutawney, they found groundhogs to be an attractive substitute for traditional animal forecasters.
