Mayor Bloomberg on the ropes: Seven ways the blizzard still lingers

4. Savvier travelers

Long lines of travelers rebook their tickets at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago Monday.

You didn't need to be stranded in JFK airport to learn some travel lessons from this storm.

Winter travelers may check weather forecasts more thoroughly – and rebook promptly when they see an alert like this one that JetBlue issued on Dec. 24: "Due to inclement weather forecast ... [we will] allow customers ... to voluntarily rebook for new flights that depart anytime through Sunday, Dec. 31."

After seeing major airports shut down on a busy holiday weekend, some may also reconsider that offer of trip insurance when they fly. Its not cheap, but might cover the cost of rebooking on a different airline or staying in a hotel unexpectedly.

Perhaps the most obvious point of all: Think of your carry-on bag as a kind of survival kit, including items to tide you through an unplanned wait.
