Carrying 100 extra pounds in your vehicle could reduce your gas mileage by 1 or 2 percent, the Energy Department says. So if you haven't bothered to look in your trunk or under the seats lately, it might pay to spend a few minutes carrying the golf-clubs, or those bags of compost you bought at the garden center, into the garage.
