Robert De Niro may be starring in an HBO adaptation of the story of the Madoff family, playing Ponzi schemer Bernard Madoff.

The story of Bernie Madoff continues to dominate the entertainment world: HBO has optioned the book “Truth and Consequences: Life Inside the Madoff Family” by Laurie Sandell as source material for a movie about the Madoffs, with Robert De Niro possibly starring as the Madoff patriarch who bilked investors of thousands through a Ponzi scheme.

The film will be produced by De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, his partner in his company Tribeca Productions. The book “The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust” by Diane Henriques will also serve as source material for the film, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sandell’s book was written with cooperation from Bernie Madoff’s wife Ruth and his surviving son Andrew.

“Reservation Road” writer John Burnham Schwartz is signed on to write the screenplay for the HBO movie.
