10 best 2011 fiction titles as chosen by Monitor reviewers

8. "Nightwoods," by Charles Frazier

“Cold Mountain” author Charles Frazier returns to the mountains of North Carolina – this time in the 1960s – in Nightwoods (Crown Publishing, 288 pp.) to tell the story of a young woman charged with caring for her murdered sister’s children. Monitor books editor Marjorie Kehe wrote that “to read this book is to disappear deep into a meticulously re-created landscape and world that – sadly – may now have gone silent.” (CSMonitor.com, 10/21/11)
