"Madame White Snake," an opera built on a Chinese folk tale, is the work of Zhou Long, a Chinese composer long noted for his blending of Eastern and Western musical traditions.

Finalists for the prize for music: Fred Lerdahl for “Arches” and Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon for “Comala."
