Ryan Lenora Brown is a correspondent for the Monitor in Johannesburg, South Africa. She has reported widely for CSM from across the continent, including Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Botswana, and Malawi. Her reporting interests skew long, narrative, and offbeat, with a particular passion for exploring African cities and the lives of the people who inhabit them. Before becoming a full-time correspondent for the Monitor, she freelanced widely in sub-Saharan Africa for outlets including The Washington Post, ForeignPolicy.com, The New York Times Magazine, Runners World, Newsweek, and others. Ryan is a fellow of the International Women's Media Foundation (2015-2018) and the International Reporting Project (2016). She was a 2011/12 Fulbright Scholar in South Africa and is the author of A Native of Nowhere: The Life of Nat Nakasa.
