Meet the citizens of 'Nimrod Nation'

A new documentary on the Sundance Channel delves into the psyche of a town where everything revolves around basketball.

Nimrod Nation

(The Sundance Channel, Nov. 26): "Deer season is over, that means it's basketball season," says a resident of the rural, hoops-crazy town of Watersmeet in Michigan's Upper Peninsula ("just call us Uppers," says another). That pretty much encapsulates this small town where life revolves around the basketball team at the single K-12 school of 240 students. They are the Nimrods and nearly every adult male in town appears to be a former Nimrod. This eight-episode documentary of life beyond cellphones and malls is a cleareyed look at a world that is often satirized but rarely presented so dispassionately. Grade: A
