The Science of Sleep (Warner Home Video, R, $27.98)
In this unconventional and whimsically peculiar film by Michel Gondry, director of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," Stéphane (Gael García Bernal), an intensely imaginative young man, has just left his father's home in Mexico and moved into his mother's Parisian apartment. There he meets his equally creative neighbor, Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg). As the story unfolds, replete with dream sequences marked by stop animation, and moving between English, French, and Spanish, the two embark on a tentative and uneasy love affair. Bonus features include the making of the film, and an interview with Lauri Faggioni, the woman responsible for the beguiling felt creatures that Stéphanie sews in the movie. Grade: A–

From Lassie to ET, there are probably few Hollywood clichés as enduring as a misunderstood adolescent and the pet who really understands. This is an uneven update of the classic based on the book, "My Friend Flicka," but this version has its moments, mostly when the spectacular Flicka herself shares the screen with just about anyone, including a wild cat. Plus, Tim McGraw, who plays the dad, sings – though not nearly enough. Happily, the extras include a McGraw music video of the film's signature song, "My Little Girl." Grade: B
