Vines to give you a lift
Once you've built a trellis, then you need a vine to grow on it - preferably one that flowers over a long period. These should do well in most parts of the US:
Annual vines:
Allamanda (Allamanda cathartica)
Cypress vine (Ipomoea quamoclit)
Cathedral bells (Cobaea scandens)
Black-eyed Susan vine (Thunbergia alata)
Mandevilla (Mandevilla x Amabilis)
Moonflower (Ipomoea alba)
Morning glory (Ipomoea tricolor)
Purple hyacinth bean (Dolichos lablab)
Sweet potato vine (Ipomoea batatas)
Perennial vines:
Clematis
Dutchman's pipe (Aristolochia macrophylla)
Five-leaf akebia (Akebia quinata)
Goldflame honeysuckle (Lonicera x Heckrottii)
Hardy kiwi (has variegated leaves)
Roses - Climbers and ramblers
Scarlet honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)
Trumpet vine (Campis radicans)
