Inmates as beauty queens

Women incarcerated in Peru's Santa Monica Prison traded their jail garb for gowns earlier this month in a beauty contest sponsored by the government. Officials, stung by criticism of prison conditions, created the gala event to show humane treatment of these women, most jailed on drug charges.
