Britain names Children's Laureate

The field of children's literature just received a boost in prestige with the creation of a new post - children's laureate. On May 10, Quentin Blake became the first author to be so honored; he has produced 200 picture books. The award, which was initiated by the late Ted Hughes, Britain's former poet laureate, is designed to celebrate an author or illustrator's lifetime achievement. The two-year appointment does not obligate Mr. Blake to produce a commemorative book, but he will act as an "ambassador" for children's literature.
