WORTH NOTING ON TV

* WEDNESDAY

Gangsta Rap: an MTV News Special Report (MTV, 10-10:30 p.m.): The music-video channel is turning an analytical eye on today's most controversial form of pop music. Young people from a variety of social backgrounds explain how they react to gangsta rap, the music whose gun-wielding images and belligerent lyrics have been charged with promoting - perhaps triggering - violence in society.

The show goes back to the music's roots in New York's ``hip hop,'' and its later appearance in Los Angeles gang culture, in a section that includes interviews with Snoop Doggy Dog, Ice-T, and other artists. The program also explores the music of Tupac Shakur, and it asks what role corporations play by cashing in on the hot trend. In the final section, the show tries to sum up the issue of the music and its relationship to youthful crime.

The American Experience (PBS, 9-10 p.m.): ``D-Day'' is this distinguished series' contribution to commemoration of the 50th anniversary of D-Day. The program examines the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, through the eyes of those who planned and fought it, with much of the focus right where it should be - on the low-ranking soldiers who carried the brunt of the battle.

Drawing on American, British, and German sources, the documentary mixes footage, stills, and personal reminiscences culled from more than 100 interviews. All of it is carefully integrated by the film's Oscar-winning producer and director, Charles Guggenheim. The program is narrated by historian David McCullough, who is also the series' host.

Daytime Emmy Awards (ABC, 9-11 p.m.): Daytime drama - as some people prefer to call the TV soaps - may be popular, but when they really want attention, they go prime time. The annual awards show is an example.

The 21st annual edition of the ceremonies, live from New York City's Marriott Marquis hotel, will be hosted by one of daytime's biggest and most enduring stars: Susan Lucci, who has played Erica Kane on ABC's ``All My Childen'' for 24(!) years.
