Nova (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Spend some time on the USS Independence, an aircraft carrier that served in the Persian Gulf; visit the ``Top Gun'' pilot-training school in California.

Surviving the Odds: To Be a Young Black Male in America (PBS, 9-11 p.m.): This live special is the first of a series focusing on the issues that young African-American men face today, such as stereotypes and media portrayals. Harvard Law School professor Charles Ogletree hosts.

World War II: When Lions Roared (NBC, 8-10 p.m.): This two-part docudrama is the behind-the-scenes story of how Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin led the American, British, and Soviet forces to win the fight against Adolf Hitler's Germany. The show examines how these three men fought the war and kept the allies together in the face of unequal sacrifice and sometimes-different objectives. The all-star cast: Michael Caine as Stalin, Bob Hoskins as Churchill, and John Lithgow as Roosevelt.

Part two airs Wednesday night at 8 p.m.

`Enough is Enough' Forum With the President (MTV, 10-11:30 p.m.): President Clinton returns to MTV for a youth forum that addresses the problem of rising violence in society. The program is part of MTV's ongoing ``Enough is Enough'' campaign that looks at causes of and solutions to violence. About 200 young people between the ages of 16 and 20 will participate in a question-and-answer discussion with the president. (Clinton's first appearance on MTV was as a presidential candidate during the 1992 election.) * WEDNESDAY

Dance in America (PBS, 8-9 p.m.): Great Performances presents ``Billboards: Prince at the Joffrey.'' The Joffrey Ballet performs new works to the music of Prince, including ``Purple Rain,'' ``Graffiti Bridge,'' and ``Parade.''
