181 DETAINED IN MAY DAY RIOTS IN BERLIN
| BERLIN
Berlin police said Thursday 181 people were arrested and 85 officers injured in rioting by young German anarchists and squatters on May Day, the international Labor Day. The police spokesman said 106 of the anarchists arrested Wednesday were freed overnight. The rest would be held pending criminal investigation of charges of assault, possession of weapons and disturbing the peace, he said.
May Day rallies focused on the struggle to reverse economic collapse in east Germany caused by its abrupt exposure to market forces after unification last year.
