Dec. 25, 1989: Dictator Nicolae Ceaucescu and his wife Elena are executed after being driven from office. National Salvation Front assumes power. March 11, 1990: Timisoara Proclamation demands that anyone who held a senior government post during Ceausescu's 24-year rule be banned from political office. April 22: Thousands gather in Bucharest University Square to denounce government of President Ion Iliescu. May 20: Romanian elections.
