TAIWAN SEEKS ALLIES IN GATT

Taiwan will allow five Eastern European countries to bid for procurement contracts worth between $3 billion and $4 billion a year, the Economic Ministry announced. The five - Hungary, Romania, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, and Poland - are members of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade. Taiwan is applying for membership and, a ministry official said, was trying to win allies among GATT's 98 member states.
