COMPANIES ADD SYMBOL FOR RECYCLING

The Procter & Gamble Company, McDonald's Corporation, and Shurfine-Central Corporation have elected to identify product packaging made from high quality waste paper. The packaging will bear the recycling symbol - three arrows that form a triangle inside a circle.

Procter & Gamble will put the symbol on boxes of detergent and cake mix. Seventy percent of the company's paperboard cartons are made from 100 percent recycled paperboard. McDonald's will display the symbol on Happy Meal boxes made from recycled paperboard.

When consumers ``shop for the symbol,'' they help create demand as well as new markets for recycled paperboard, according to the American Paper Institute.
