July Fourth

The line from which I came Was here before the Fourth We celebrate today. The ones who fought to stop The tax on tea and rum, And Tories at the time, Had mingled over mugs And sailed as privateers Before they made a choice Between ragtag and red. All is forgiven now, Perhaps forgotten too, As natives celebrate With long lost relatives Who kept surnames intact By way of Halifax.
