Hamilton stars in spy series on CBS

Spies CBS, Tuesdays, 8-9 p.m. Stars George Hamilton and Gary Kroeger. Creator-writer-coexecutive producer: Jordan Moffat. Director: Corey Allen. Producer: Jim Brown for Lorimar Telepictures. Somebody at CBS and Lorimar figured there might be a place in TV for a James Bondlike series and convinced George Hamilton he had just the right tan for the part. He had the right tan; he just didn't have the right script.

``Spies'' tries.

It's contrived and calculated and pseudo-sophisticated. But, even with a charmingly square sidekick thrown in for any unsophisticated viewers, it confuses cute for clever. Measured against ``007,'' ``Spies'' is ``001.''
