Suburban spring

We all know about the dogs, their ill-contained delight. But the cats emerge -- each like a plush surprise from its estate -- ears sharp as the blades of the tulip, still, alert to every new-awakened rustling. Late in the lengthening afternoons the weekend golfer poses taut then slices down the tunnel of full-summer fairways. Girls in cotton the color of awnings that flare in the wind laugh in the shade of their blossoming secrets.
