Argentina to crack down on those who torture prisoners

The Argentine government has enacted a law enabling the courts to sentence public officials or private citizens to life in jail for torturing prisoners, a government spokesman said. The life sentence can also be imposed on officials who were aware that a prisoner was being tortured but failed to report it to the courts within 24 hours.
