Boston Pops conductor strikes up amity chord to stay on

Composer John Williams, who announced in June that he was quitting as conductor of the Boston Pops, has decided to stay with the popular orchestra indefinitely, its general manager announced Thursday. The announcement followed a resolution of differences between Williams and the orchestra members. ''It will be my great honor to celebrate with the orchestra its 100th anniversary,'' he said. The conductor, who wrote the scores for some of Hollywood's biggest moneymakers, including ''Star Wars'' and ''E.T.,'' joined the orchestra in 1980 and his recordings with the Pops have been best sellers.
