Unemployment did not give President Reagan's Democratic opponents any ammunition last month. But it didn't help him much, either. March's 7.8 percent jobless rate was unchanged from February. The rate may be pausing before continuing down again, or it may be as low as it can go in the present economy. Some economists have said the economy is expanding too fast and that credit demands will drive up interest rates and slow the recovery.

Unemployment among adult males dropped 0.2 percent in March to 6.8 percent, while the rate for adult women stayed at 6.9 percent.
