'Tennis diplomacy' between China, S. Korea

China and South Korea advanced their unofficial relations Friday, squaring off in a historic tennis match that marked the first sports contact on Chinese territory between the two countries.

Touted as a round of ''tennis diplomacy,'' the match was reminiscent of the so-called Ping-Pong diplomacy of 1971 when the United States sent a table-tennis team to China before the countries formally recognized each other.

South Korea and China, which do not have diplomatic relations, have competed at international sports meets before but have never sent their athletes to the other's territory.
