US official to El Salvador to probe illegal food sales

Charles Gladson, deputy director of the US Agency for International Development, is due to arrive here from Washington today to investigate the illegal sale of US-donated food in Salvadorean markets, reports Monitor contributor Chris Hedges.

A group of Salvadorean government and military officials, along with top-ranking AID officials, visited the marketplace in San Vicente Monday, conducting what they termed an ''exhaustive'' search for AID-donated food. ''We found no significant diversions of US-donated food,'' one official said.

Salvador-based AID officials Tuesday visited the marketplace in Cojutepeque and said that although they again found violations, they did not feel a significant amount of US food had been diverted.
