US agrees to repay EC for steel-levy losses

Washington agreed in principle to compensate the European Community for losses caused by controversial US import levies on special steels, European trade sources said Wednesday. The Community had demanded compensation under General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade rules for the US moves, which Brussels estimated would cost Common Market steel producers some $570 million between this year and 1987.
